What A Homemade or Poorly Made Business Image Really Says About You!

If you’ve been handing out homemade perforated business cards, cards you made on VistaPrint, business cards or God forbid a logo you made using clipart from Microsoft Word or do-it-yourself web site tonight template, then this article is for you.

People often say “I’ll hire a professional, really go for it and focus on marketing after I make the big sale, so for now I’ll just do it myself. Well how do you expect to make the big sale with a poor business image? This type of thinking is so backwards. You can’t afford to put yourself out there with a bad business image? Do you know how much money you’re losing because people aren’t taking you seriously?

Most won’t admit it, but just as someone may look you up and down and size you up, people do the same with your business card and marketing materials. There is a lawyer we know that gives business cards what he calls the “thumb check”, meaning that he swipes his thumb across your card to feel for its texture, paper weight, embossing, etc and that determines the level of credibility or ranking of your business in his mind.

We have personally seen companies being passed up on major deals, even though the owner was well-liked, because they didn't take the company itself seriously and here’s why.

Homemade or Poorly Made Business Cards, Printed Materials and Websites Visually Communicate:

  • You may close down overnight which is why you only made a few cards

  • You may change your address or phone number and are unstable and untrustworthy

  • You’re unsure of yourself and are uncommitted to your vision

  • You aren’t willing to invest in having your stationery done professionally and don’t consider your business a priority

  • You have low standards, are cheap, will cut corners and will probably provide a low quality product or service

  • Your taste level is not sophisticated enough and therefore unsuitable for high income or celebrity clients

  • Why should people open their wallet for you and you haven’t open your wallet to invest in yourself? One of our clients reported receiving 600 new clients from her new business cards. She now has absolutely no problem paying for professional designs, not because she’s making money, but because she recognizes the value of it. In fact, its absolutely inexpensive to her now compared to the return she has received on her minimal investment in her business.
